Pars, Putts and Ponytails

March 3rd, 2010

Howdy!  My name is Sarah Beth Davis.  I am a freshman this year on the Fightin’ Texas Aggies Women’s Golf Team.  After my first semester, I know that I have made a great decision in choosing to be a part of this team.

Our second semester kicked off with our team retreat in late January in Grapevine Texas.  The coaches surprised us with a team bonding experience at an indoor water park!! It was fun traveling with all nine members of the team.  Being able to swim in the middle of January was a different experience, but we gladly showed off our lovely golf tans.  The golf teams’ sport psychologist, John Eliot, was also there to talk to us about our expectations for the upcoming spring season.  He gave us some good tips and got us pumped up for achieving our goals.  After the trip it was back to school, workouts, and qualifying.

The first tournament of the season was in Parrish, FL at the Central District Invitational.  I was not able to go on this trip because of a shoulder injury but closely followed the team’s progress on Golfstat.  They played very well considering the field especially Julia and Sarah who tied for ninth individually!  I was very impressed and ready to go with them to the next tournament.  From the many stories they told me, it sounded like they had a fantastic time like we always do as a team.  They came back with a video of Julia pouncing on a faux alligator pretending to be Steve Irwin, the crocodile hunter, which was very entertaining!

The tournament we just got back from last night was the following weekend in Sorrento, FL at the UCF Challenge.  Like we said we would all week we took first place!  It was a thrilling weekend for the team.  We left early Saturday morning and were surprised with a trip to Universal Studios in Orlando on Saturday evening!  Luckily, we were with Wendi who has been many times and knew the park like the back of her hand.  She first took us to the roller coaster “Red Rocket” where we had to BEG Ashley and Julia to ride on it with us.  The rides were videotaped, and the video of Ashley with Wendi and Julia with Coach are priceless!  If only there were sounds to go along with the clips! HAHA!  As a team we love making stories and memories and this trip was filled with them!

We had a solid tournament.  Julia blew everyone out of the water by shooting a seven under 65 the first round and a three over 75 in the second round.  Sarah Z also played lights out by being three under after the first two rounds.  After the first day, we were tied for second place and seven strokes behind Georgia State.   A rainstorm delayed us on Tuesday morning but no matter if it was raining the team wanted to go out and play!  The storm passed and we were able to complete the entire third round.  We came from behind and shot the best round of the day by nine strokes.  Julia came in first with a six under 210 and Sarah Z came in second with a one under 215.  It was an awesome experience because we had a feeling we were going to win all week!

We have about 3 weeks off until our next event at our rival school t.u.’s tournament in Austin, TX at the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational.  We are trying to get as many maroon shirts out there as possible, so I encourage you to come and support us in Austin.

I will be back to let you know how we did in late March

Thanks & Gig ‘em

Sarah Beth
