“He’s a threat every time he touches the ball. He’s outstanding. His field vision, his athleticism, everything is great. He’s the real deal. He’s got one of the best return averages in Houston and in the state. He scored 11 or 12 touchdowns in two years on returns alone. His first step is pretty explosive and his field vision is excellent.”

Coach Demeritt on Robinson:
“First of all, Ivan is a good young man. He’s the type of kid you want in your program. He brings some intangibles to the table that some people don’t possess. When you’re 6-4, 252-pounds and can run like he can, you just don’t find that in many defensive linemen. Ivan really uses his hands well, and he runs extremely well. You’re talking about kid who runs a high 4.7 forty-yard dash. At 252 pounds, that’s pretty impressive. He was the first leg on the 4 x 100 relay for us, and that should tell you a little bit about how well he can move.”

What They’re Saying

Coach Westerberg on Cedric Ogbuehi…
“When he was a sophomore, he was a backup defensive lineman. We decided we needed help on the offensive line and, as athletic as he is, we needed to get him on the field. He took over and just ran with the opportunity. He’s very athletic, with long arms. He’s a great pass protector and just a tremendous blocker overall.”

“I think there’s nothing but upside for Cedric. He’s a great, hardworking kid, and I know he’ll come in to A &M and do tremendous things. He has a frame that can put on a lot more weight and, with his arm reach, I think you’ll see tremendous things out of him.”

“His biggest asset is his athleticism. The key for Cedric is he can really run for a big kid. There are some highlights you can see where he really gets out and runs full speed. He can flat go for a big kid.”

Notable

• Ogbuehi is the third player from Allen High School to join the Aggies during the Mike Sherman (others are Uzoma Nwachukwu and Steven Terrell)

    Coach Hardin on Damontre Moore:
“He’s definitely a force out on the field. He’s 6-6 and really runs well. When he gets to the football, he’s got a pretty good punch to him. He did a great job as a defensive end for us, and also on special teams. He was great on punt and kickoff coverage. I think he’s going to help the Aggies.”

Damontre Moore:
“For me, A&M was like a home away from home. Some coaches at other schools just talk about themselves and try to sell you on everything. But with A&M they kept it real with me and treated me like I was more than just a prospect. They treated me like a human being and took time to get to know me. It was just really like a home environment and I knew it was right for me.”

What They’re Saying

  Coach Crivellari on Jake Matthews:
“I think he uses his hands, and feet really well. Just his knowledge of what is going on the field is just incredible. He sees things and picks it up quickly and reacts. The technique that he uses is some of the best I’ve ever had the opportunity to coach.”

On how Matthew’s “football family” and his rapid development at the tackle position…
“There’s a lot of good gene’s there with Jake’s family history. What makes Jake unique is that he’s only played on the offensive line for three years. We converted him to the o-line his sophomore year. He played quarterback his freshman year, so that speaks about the type of athleticism he has. He just started growing and became one of our biggest kids in the program. We saw that he was going to end up playing offensive line after that. We made the move and he picked it up quickly. For him to be as technically sound and be able to play the position the way he does after only playing there for three years is just incredible. It’s a credit to him and his understanding of the game.”

What They’re Saying

Coach Franchione on Jonathan Mathis:
“He’s a very disciplined individual who doesn’t draw much attention to himself verbally. He takes care of business in the classroom and does a tremendous job on the practice field. He plays hard every play and gives great effort. I’d love to have a team full of guys like Jonathan Mathis because you wouldn’t have any headaches. He does everything really well and is a smart kid that understands how to take care of the finer details that some young men overlook."

“He has goals that he’s working for. He was one of our biggest recruits two years ago because we knew we’d need a defensive tackle to come in and play for us in 2008. He did exactly what I thought he would do. He came out of high school and transitioned into college extremely well. He did a tremendous job of adjusting to the new atmosphere. A lot of that can be attributed to the job the coaches at Westfield High School do. Jonathan has also been very committed in the classroom. He knew exactly what he had to get done and he followed a plan and used all the tools and resources we provide to our young men. When I say ‘committed,’ he was in the classroom during every mini-mester and every summer session. It’s hard for 18-year-old kids to sacrifice their summer and winter breaks, along with giving up the family time that goes along with that. He did it because of his goals and where he wanted to be. It’s an awesome experience as a coach to watch him have this opportunity to play at Texas A &M and to see what he can do to help their program. There’s not a doubt in my mind that he’ll be a graduate of Texas A&M and I fully expect to see him do great things for that program.”

Jonathan Mathis:
“I think my biggest strength is that I listen and do whatever the coaches teach me. I’m willing to learn whatever techniques they show me and, other than that, I just play hard and give 100 percent effort all the time. I also think I’m pretty flexible. I can play all spots along the defensive line.”

Notable

• Mathis was coached by Brad Franchione at Blinn College in nearby Brenham, Texas. Brad Franchione’s father, Dennis, was the Aggies’ head coach from 2003-2007. The elder Franchione compiled a 32-29 record in five seasons and led the Aggies to three bowl games.

  What They’re Saying

Coach McGuire on Ben Malena…
“Ben is a great kid. I’ve known him since the sixth grade and, since he’s been here, he’s been an incredible kid for us. As a football player, he has great vision and balance. He’s one of those running backs that is a perfect fit for a pro-style offense because he’s patient and understands what holes to hit. He can bounce it to the outside, but he’s not one of those guys who is going to bounce it outside whenever he doesn’t need to. I see some high school running backs that make some big plays, but miss out on a lot of big plays because they aren’t patient. Ben’s a very patient running back. That and his maturity are what has been most impressive to me.”

Ben Malena:
“Oh man, it’s going to be great to make things official. The opportunity to go to college is once in a lifetime. To have the opportunity to get it paid for by the best school in Texas is just a tremendous honor. You have no choice but to feel like a winner. My siblings, everyone in my family, is proud of me. I don’t want to let anyone down. This is an opportunity that means everything to me.”
