The Texas A&M soccer team signed five student-athletes to national letters of intent on Wednesday, February 1st.

Janae Cousineau (San Clemente, Calif.), Karlie Mueller (Sioux Falls, S.D.), Kristi Leonard (League City, Texas), Jackie Tondl (Omaha, Neb.) and Britt Blackwell (Grapevine, Texas) will join the Aggie soccer team for the 2012 season.

Click on this link to see Bios and Photos of all 5 signees:
http://www.aggieathletics.com/ViewArticle.dbml?ATCLID=205371984&DB_OEM_ID=27300

“It is great to have this talented group of soccer players signed to play at Texas A&M in 2012,” Head coach G Guerrieri said. “All of our coaches are excited about the great skills and potential each of these five players brings to the Aggie soccer program. Even though this class is only half the number of our 2011 class, we’re hopeful that it can be just as impactful.

“This is a group of excellent students who understand the academic challenges and opportunities that Texas A&M University offers. Each student-athlete comes from a culture of solid academic and athletic standards. Each young lady comes from a wonderful family and I know these players will fit in perfectly with the rest of our Aggie soccer family because they’ve been raised to be great students, teammates, and members of their communities.

“As you look at these players you’ll surely notice how we’ve tried to bring in players who could compete quickly at the highest levels – in our everyday competitive training environment, and also in our Aggie line-up as we compete with the other top teams in America every week.

“We have graduated some incredible players following another championship season for A&M in 2011 and we will return a very talented, deep, and experienced team for the 2012 season. So we were looking for players in this class who were special and could compete for Texas A&M right away.

“This five-player class includes three very special multi-dimensional players (Karlie Mueller, Janae Cousineau, and Britt Blackwell) who can immediately make us better in a number of places, one proto-typical central defender (Jackie Tondl), and a dangerous left-sided attacking player (Kristi Leonard).

“One of the common denominators of the students in this signing class is their propensity to win at everything they do. As a team, we are judged by how many games we win. So, I feel it’s very important that the players on our roster have a historical habit and a burning desire to win and to find every way possible to keep improving throughout their careers so that we forever win at Texas A&M. These young ladies are winners on the field and in the classroom. Each of these student-athletes has a history of positively affecting their teammates to win games and championships.

“I know this group of players will be able to help us immediately. They will make us more talented in attack and defense and I think they will help us to be a very competitive team as we move into a new chapter in our program’s history as members of the Southeastern Conference (SEC).”

Howdy! I hope your New Year is off to a great start!

Classes have begun for the new Spring Semester at Texas A&M and there are lots of cool things swirling around our program, coaches, and great players. In this journal entry, I will hit on some of those news items…

Spring Workouts Kick Off
Our players started working with our speed and conditioning coach – Paul Sealey – on January 18th. The spring is a very important part of our yearlong training calendar.

The Spring is when we do a ton of individual development work for all of our returning players, with the idea of “a rising tide lifts all ships.” We feel like if we can make each player faster, stronger, more agile, technically proficient, and tactically aware, then the entire team automatically improves. Then, when we start to train them as a team again, we can accomplish more and more on the soccer field.

The players will work out with Paul 4 mornings a week and then we will do some functional soccer training 1 afternoon a week for the first 31/2 weeks of the spring semester. Then we’ll add in more hours of soccer training in the afternoons starting on Valentine’s Day. We don’t actually play a spring game against an outside team until Rice comes to Aggieland for an exhibition match on Sunday March 25th.

VOTE for Top Moment of Aggies’ 2011 Championship Season
The 2011 soccer season was another successful and memorable season for the Aggies. In our last year in the Big 12 Conference we won our 12th Big 12 Championship Trophy and lead the NCAA in scoring offense, while securing our 17th consecutive bid to the NCAA Championship Tournament.

The Aggies are the most successful soccer program in Big 12 History, and we will be heading to the Southeastern Conference this coming July. But before we go, we need our fans to vote for the Top Moment in our 2011 season. Click on the link below that will take you to a cool video which already includes the Top 5 Moments and allows you to vote for your favorite.

CLICK HERE TO SEE THE VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS AND VOTE FOR YOUR FAVORITE

We Need YOU in the Aggie Soccer Club
The Aggie Soccer Club is a very important part of the total Aggie soccer program. It’s the best way for YOU to help the team!

The club is a specific booster club under the umbrella of the 12th Man Foundation which raises money and support for the soccer program at Texas A&M.

Each year, the club has been able to provide facility improvements and creature comforts for the club members and fans, but more importantly has provided needed training and gameday equipment and facility upgrades for the Aggie players.

Being a member of the Aggie Soccer Club gives you INSIDE ACCESS to the A&M soccer coaches and players. In 2012, members will take part in member only receptions with the players in the preseason and on game days, plus have the opportunity to get a gameday report from Coach G immediately before home games. Members also receive access to the Aggie Soccer Club Deck at Ellis Field – a new, covered club area with the most panoramic views of the field on game days.

There are 3 different membership levels available to ASC members, based on the commitment you can make to the team. So, please join today, and even better – recruit 2 friends to join with you. Just visit www.aggiesoccerclub.com to sign up right now!

Dine and Celebrate with the Aggie Soccer Players on Sat Feb 4th
The 19th annual Texas A&M Soccer Awards Banquet is set for Saturday February 4th at 6:30pm in the Zone Club at Kyle Field.

This is always a fun event for our players and fans. It’s a chance to see our players dressed up and celebrating the past soccer season. It’s the night where our players present the special team awards that they vote upon for their teammates, and it’s the first chance anyone will have to view the new movie highlighting our final year in the Big 12.

Tickets for the Banquet at $25 and include dinner. To make your reservation, contact Curt Magnuson at cmagnuson@athletics.tamu.edu today!

Facility Update News
Ellis Field continued to evolve into the best women’s soccer facility in America in 2011 with the completion of the public restroom facility in the southwest corner of the stadium. But, we’re not nearly finished with the upgrades!

This spring you’ll see construction of a new Aggie Brick wall on the north end of the stadium (Reed Arena end) followed by the addition of the new roof over the west-side grandstand this summer.

The new roof will extend over the entire 240 foot long west-side grandstand. It will cantilever over the Aggie Soccer Club Deck, the main walkways, and the upper 4 rows of the grandstand, providing comfortable shade to every seat on that side of Ellis Field on those warm Friday evenings of the NCAA season. And, because the roof will cantilever over the grandstand, no views will be blocked for our season ticket holders or club members on the west-side of the stadium.

The project is well along in the university’s process of approvals, bids, and construction policies. We expect to see crews out at the facility this May and completion of this phase of the Ellis Field upgrades done during the summer.

So, if you want a suggestion for 2012, I have TWO:
1.	Buy Soccer Season Tickets as soon as they become available!
2.	Become a member of the Aggie Soccer Club so you’ll have access to the Club Deck on the west-side grandstand!

Notes from My 1st SEC Soccer Coaches Meeting
I flew to Birmingham Alabama for the January 18 SEC Soccer Coaches meeting. I, along with the other Aggie soccer coaches, have been friends with most of the SEC coaches for years and years. And, I can say that it’s a great group of people who all want the very best for the sport. So, the meeting at the SEC offices were productive and enjoyable.

There were more than a few tidbits of info that I think will excite our fans. Here are 5:
1.	In 2012 we will be playing all 13 of the other schools in the conference
2.	Teams will have either 6 or 7 home games – actual schedule has not been distributed to us yet
3.	There will be a post-season SEC Championship Tournament in Orange Beach, Alabama
4.	14 SEC soccer games will be broadcast on Television (ESPNU, Fox Regionals, and CSS)
5.	Televised games also should be available to the 70 million viewers with access to ESPN3

We were addressed by Commissioner Mike Slive. He expressed how excited he was to have A&M and Mizzou in the league and how 2012 would be a year of transition for all sports in the league. And that the future of the league is incredibly bright.

As coaches we worked on ideas for the 2013 regular season schedule and conference tournament and ideas to get the most SEC teams possible into the NCAA Tournament while allowing our best teams to advance to and win future College Cups. There is still much to be sorted out and decided upon, but I’m confident that we will find great solutions to issues and can see SEC soccer rise to the highest levels on the nation scene.

Stay tuned…more info will come out and as it becomes official, I will share it with you on www.coachg.com

Follow me on Twitter and Facebook

The Aggies' great 2011 season came to an abrupt halt in the 2nd round of the NCAA Championship Tournament in Charlottesville, Virginia, when the #7 Aggies were upset by Virginia Tech. Going into the match, the young Aggies had been on an incredible run - going 13-1-2 since early September and winning their 12th Big 12 championship, and making their 17th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

In this week's Coach's Journal, we will look back at the 2011 season and provide some video highlights of the year.

The Aggies’ great season ended abruptly in Virginia during the 2nd round of the NCAA Tournament with a 1-3 upset loss to Virginia Tech.

We gave up some uncommonly soft goals and couldn’t come back before time ran out on us against a tough Hokie team. Virginia Tech played a great match, earning their first ever win over A&M (The Aggies had beaten them in each of the previous 2 regular seasons).

Prior to the road loss in Virginia, the Aggies had been on an impressive run of form; going unbeaten over the past 7 weeks, winning the Big 12 Tournament over #2 ranked OSU, and then cruising past the SEC runners-up (LSU) in the 1st round of the NCAA Tournament 4-0 in front of a large home crowd at Ellis Field.

The Aggies weren’t the only traditional national power to be upset and eliminated from this year’s NCAA Championship Tournament. Former National Champions Notre Dame, North Carolina, Portland, Santa Clara, and perennial College Cup teams like UCLA, Florida, and Penn State also stumbled last weekend. So, there will be a 1st time/new National Champion crowned at the College Cup in suburban Atlanta this December.

Hot off of its 12th-and-final Big 12 Championship last weekend, the No. 3 seeded Texas A&M soccer team will host Louisiana State Friday in the NCAA First Round. The 6:30 p.m. match at Ellis Field marks the No. 12 Aggies’ (15-5-2) 17th-consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament and their second time to tangle with the Tigers (13-7-1) in the postseason.

The Aggies rallied from a two-goal deficit against Kansas in the Big 12 Tournament quarterfinal match, tying the game at 3-3 before advancing in a penalty-kick shootout, 5-3. In the semifinal round, A&M avenged its only Big 12 regular season loss with a sound 3-0 shutout of Missouri. The team will leave the conference on top after winning its 12th Big 12 title in a 1-0 shutout over Oklahoma State. The Aggies handed the Cowgirls their only loss of the season when a lone goal by senior Megan Majewski with nine seconds left in regulation gave A&M the victory it had been looking for.

LSU earned Southeastern Conference runner-up status in the regular season for the third time in four years. With the No. 2 seed heading into the SEC Tournament in Orange Beach, Ala., the Tigers dropped a 3-0 decision to No. 7 seed Auburn in the quarterfinal round. This is the fourth NCAA berth for LSU.

Fans who are unable to attend Friday’s match but want to catch the action can watch and listen to the game live online at AggieAthletics.com. Live stats will also be available through the A&M web site.

TICKETS/FREE ADMISSION FOR A&M STUDENTS

BIG 12 CHAMPIONS

In A&M’s 16th consecutive and final trip to the Big 12 Championship, which is in its 16th year of existence, the Aggies defeated No. 1 seed Oklahoma State in the Championship final to earn the program’s 12th conference title. The Aggies end their tenure in the conference with a 23-11-3 all-time record at the tournament and are one of just two teams (Texas) that have qualified for all 16 championships. The last time A&M brought home a tournament trophy was in 2005 after defeating Missouri, Nebraska and Colorado.

BIG 12 RUNNERS-UP

The Aggies entered the Big 12 Championship as the No. 2 seed after a tough regular season. A&M had a rocky start to the season, but quickly picked up momentum after a 4-3 overtime upset against top-ranked North Carolina on the road. The team only suffered one loss in conference play, shutting out five of eight Big 12 opponents. The Aggies’ strong finish in regular-season conference play helped them to a No. 2 seed in the Big 12 Tournament.

NCAA TOURNAMENT

The No. 3-seeded Aggies have made 17 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances with G Guerrieri at the helm. This year the team was an automatic qualifier after winning the Big 12 Tournament last week. Last season, the No. 4-seeded and ninth-ranked Aggies traveled to Minneapolis, Minn., where they drew with North Dakota State, 1-1, and advanced to the second round on penalty kicks. The team fell to host Minnesota in the NCAA second round, 0-2. The Aggies are 23-16-3 in the NCAA postseason, making four program-best runs to the Elite Eight.

SCOUTING LOUISIANA STATE

The Tigers finished the regular season as the SEC runners-up with an 8-3 conference mark. An SEC Tournament quarterfinal loss to No. 7 seed Auburn put LSU at 13-7-1 on the season overall. Taryne Boudreau leads the team with 30 points on 12 goals and six assists this season, and was selected First Team All-SEC. In goal, Mo Isom has played 1,763 minutes and owns 57 saves and eight shutouts while allowing 20 goals. Isom is a Lowes Senior CLASS Award candidate and defender Allysha Champman was named the SEC Co-Defensive Player of the Year and First Team All-SEC.

THE SERIES

The Aggies and Tigers have only met once before, in the 2009 NCAA Second Round. The match ended in a 1-1 double-overtime draw before A&M took a 4-2 advantage in the penalty-kick shootout to advance to the third round of the tournament.

NATIONALLY RANKED

The Aggies have been either ranked or receiving votes in national top-25 polls every week for the past 16 years. A&M is currently ranked 12th in the Soccer Times poll, 15th in the Soccer America poll and No. 17 in the NSCAA/Continental Tire Top 25. The team is also ranked No. 9 among TopDrawerSoccer.com’s list of 64 tournament teams.

NATIONAL OFFENSE

Through last week’s games, the Aggies have the No. 1 scoring offense in the nation, leading all NCAA Division I teams with 3.23 goals per game. Freshman Kelley Monogue is ranked 13th in points per game (2.05), 13th in goals per game (0.818), fifth in total goals (18) and seventh in total points (45). Junior Beth West’s 11 assists rank 11th in the nation, while senior Merritt Mathias has contributed 10 assists to sit at 20th. Freshman Annie Kunz is 29th in total points with 33.

AGGIE RPI

In the most recent RPI rankings (through games of Nov. 9) the Aggies sit at No. 11, led by only Oklahoma State (No. 7) in the Big 12. A&M has consistently been in the top 25 in RPI rankings since reporting began this season. The Aggies’ 71 goals this season is a national leader.

2011 ROSTER

The Aggies’ 25-player roster features 13 upperclassmen, two sophomores and 10 freshmen. A&M’s fresh squad is guided by four seniors. The team returns seven starters and 11 letterwinners from a year ago.

ALL-BIG 12

The Aggies had six players with 10 awards in five different categories on the All-Big 12 awards list. The list was highlighted by Monogue, who was named the Offensive Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year, and was selected to the All-Big 12 first team and the Big 12 All-Newcomer Team. Mathias, West and sophomore Rachel Lenz also received first-team honors, while freshman Meghan Streight was named to the All-Big 12 second team. Streight and freshman Annie Kunz join Monogue on the All-Newcomer roster.

BIG 12 ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM

Four Aggies found themselves on the Big 12 Championship All-Tournament Team Sunday after the Championship match. Monogue, Kunz, Mathias and freshman Meghan Streight were named to the all-tournament team, and Monogue was named the Offensive Most Outstanding Player.

FRESH TALENT

The Aggies’ 10 freshmen have made a big impact on the 2011 squad. Monogue and Kunz top the team offensively, while both goalkeepers, Renée McDermott and Day, are freshmen. Bailey and Bianca Brinson contribute regularly as forwards and Streight, Perry and Edwards round out the midfield. Each freshman has seen action already this season, while all-but 23 (68 percent) of A&M’s 71 goals were netted by members of the Class of 2015.

TDS FRESHMAN TOP 100 LIST

Seven A&M freshmen were honored on the TopDrawerSoccer.com Freshman Top 100 List, including Monogue, who led the nation at No. 1. Kunz reached No. 7 in the rankings, followed by Streight at No. 33, No. 43 Day, No. 52 Bailey, No. 64 Shea Groom and No. 71 Perry.

FIVE AGGIES ON TDS BIG 12 TOP 20 LIST

Five members of the Aggie soccer team were named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Big 12 Top 20 Player Rankings. Mathias led the team with a No. 2 ranking. No. 4 Monogue, No. 7 Rachel Lenz and No. 9 Shea Groom rounded out A&M’s top-10 selections, while Kunz completed the list of Aggies at No. 14. A&M and OSU were the only two teams with five players on the list.

STREIGHT ON TDS TEAM OF THE WEEK

Streight’s outstanding performance at the Big 12 Tournament got her more than a spot on the all-tournament team. The freshman defender was selected to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Week on Monday for the first time in her career. Streight placed two of four shots on frame last week in San Antonio, playing all 290 minutes for the Aggies and helping the backline to hold opponents to just over half the shots taken by A&M as the team won its 12th conference championship.

MAC HERMANN TROPHY WATCH LIST

Mathias and Young, both seniors, were placed on the Missouri Athletic Club (MAC) Hermann Trophy Watch List. The award is the highest honor in collegiate soccer and will be given to a winner on Jan. 6. The field will be narrowed to 15 semifinalists in late November. A&M was one of only eight schools who placed two selections on the list.

The Big 12 Championship will be held at Blossom Soccer Stadium for the 15th consecutive season.
Quarterfinals and semifinals games will be streamed live on www.aggiesoccer.com

The championship game will be aired live at 3:30 p.m. Sunday on FSN.

The top eight teams (of the nine conference teams that compete in soccer) have qualified for the Big 12 Championship. The OK State, as the regular season champs and top seed, will face their Bedlam Rival Oklahoma in the quarterfinals on Wednesday at 5:30pm. Oklahoma State are the first team since Texas A&M in 2002 to finish Big 12 play without a loss.

No. 4 seed Texas Tech will meet No. 5 seed Texas at 11:30am.
No. 3 seed Baylor will play sixth-seeded Missouri at 2:30pm.
No. 2 seed Texas A&M will face seventh-seeded Kansas.

Here is quick look at the Jayhawks, whom the Aggies defeated 3-0 earlier in the year in Lawrence, Kansas:

Kansas (11-8-0 overall, 3-5-0 in Big 12)
The Jayhawks closed a successful regular season with a 3-0 loss to an Oklahoma team (who needed a victory in order to qualify for the Big 12 Championship). A majority of the Jayhawks’ success has been due to its strong offensive output (2.26 goals per game), which ranks second to the Aggies in the Big 12 and 22nd nationally. Freshman Ingrid Vidal, who is from Palmira, Colombia, owns team-high 11 goals and 27 points. Junior Whitney Berry also has 27 points with the help of 13 assists, a KU single-season record and among the national leaders. Freshman Jamie Fletcher has been coming on strong. She has seven goals and has collected seven points in the last four games. But, KU is ranked last in every defensive category.

Texas A&M (13-5-1 overall, 6-1-1 in Big 12)
The Aggies finished its regular season with a 3-0 victory over rival Texas. Texas A&M has shut out eight opponents, including five in Big 12 action. The Aggies are second nationally in scoring, averaging over 3 goals per game. The Aggies’ 10 freshmen have made a big impact in 2011, with seven first-year players on the field at any given time. Freshman Kelley Monogue ranks 1st in the Big 12 and among the top 25 in the nation in points per game (12th), goals per game (12th), total goals (8th) and total points (9th). Freshman goalkeeper Jordan Day leads the league in conference games in save percentage and ranks second in goals against average, shutouts (5) and shutouts per game. The Aggies are 10-1-1 since defeating then #1 North Carolina on September 11th.

The Aggies finished one single point behind #2 ranked OK State in the final regular season standings; OSU tied A&M in College Station 0-0 on October 23rd.

A&M is ranked 1st in every offensive category and 2nd in every defensive category in the conference.

Texas A&M is biggest draw in Big 12 soccer history
As you’d expect from the best-supported team in America, the Aggies have also drawn the largest crowds in Big 12 Tourney History.

BIG 12 CHAMPIONS

The Aggies won their 11th Big 12 Championship during the 2010 regular season. In its final home match, the No. 6 Aggies upset No. 5 Oklahoma State and were guaranteed a share of the title. A draw with Texas in the final game of the regular season made the Aggies the sole owners of the trophy. The Aggies and Cowgirls are currently neck-and-neck in the conference, with OSU leading with 13 points and A&M trailing with 12. Baylor is between the two teams with 13 points.

SCOUTING OKLAHOMA

The Sooners are 6-10 this season, with a 1-4 Big 12 mark. In 2010 the team went 12-8-3 and finished third in the Big 12 with a 5-4-1 mark. Junior Caitlin Mooney and sophomore Dria Hampton lead the team offensively with 15 and 12 points, respectively. Mooney has scored five goals and assisted five, while Hampton owns four goals and has contributed four assists. Sophomore Amy Petrikin has netted four goals this season, three of them game winners. Junior goalkeeper Kelsey Devonshire has spent 1,244 minutes in goal, making 50 saves while allowing 26 goals on the season.

SCOUTING OKLAHOMA STATE

The Cowgirls are undefeated this season and hold a 15-0-1 mark after drawing with Texas last weekend. OSU has remained at No. 2 in the NSCAA poll for six-straight weeks. In 2010 the Cowgirls finished the season in the NCAA Elite Eight. The team was the Big 12 runner-up with an 8-2-0 record after falling to the sixth-ranked Aggies in a College Station match that guaranteed A&M a share of the title. This season senior Krista Lopez leads the pack with 21 points on five assists and eight goals, including four game winners. Lopez was tabbed the Co-Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week in September. Goalkeepers Adrianna Franch and Rosa Medina have split time in goal, combining for nine shutouts and allowing only one goal per game, at the most. The keepers have also combined for 60 saves, allowing just five goals together. The Cowgirls are ranked No. 1 in the nation in won-lost-tied percentage and own the third-best defense.

THE SERIES

The Aggies and Sooners have met almost every year since 1996, the inaugural year of Big 12 soccer. A&M owns a 15-2 all-time record over Oklahoma, only allowing nine goals by the Sooners. Last season, A&M hosted OU, resulting in a 2-1 victory for the Aggies. Seniors Rachel Shipley and Alyssa Mautz netted goals for A&M, with Mautz scoring the golden goal in double overtime. Then-junior Kelsey Kraft scored the lone goal for OU.

In the Big 12 Tournament in San Antonio, the Aggies and Sooners met again. Oklahoma won the semifinal match, 1-0 in overtime on a 92nd-minute goal by Whitney Palmer that was assisted by Hampton.

The Aggies have never lost to the Cowgirls in the regular season, holding an all-time record of 15-1-2 over Oklahoma State. The only loss by A&M came in the 2009 Big 12 Tournament championship match. Last season the Aggies defeated the Cowgirls at home, 1-0, on a Shipley penalty kick to guarantee A&M a share of the Big 12 Championship. A tie with Texas the next weekend gave the Aggies sole possession of the trophy for the 11th time in program history.

LAST TIME OUT – DRAKE

Freshmen Kelley Monogue and Allie Bailey each netted two goals and contributed an assist as the Aggies cruised to a 6-1 victory over Drake in A&M’s final nonconference match of the regular season. Senior Merritt Mathias and freshman Meghan Streight also scored goals in the winning effort. Freshman Jordan Day spent the game in goal, making three saves for the win.

NATIONALLY RANKED

The Aggies have been either ranked or receiving votes in national top-25 polls every week for the past 16 years. A&M is currently receiving votes in the NSCAA/adidas and the Soccer Times polls. The team is also ranked No. 11 among TopDrawerSoccer.com’s list of 64 tournament teams, a season best for Aggie soccer in that poll.

A&M is NATION’S TOP OFFENSE

Through last weekend’s games, the Aggies have the No. 1 scoring offense in the nation, leading all NCAA teams with 3.63 goals per game. Monogue is ranked 15th in points per game (2.06), 17th in goals per game (0.813), ninth in total goals (13) and 11th in total points (33). Junior Beth West is 11th in the nation in assists per game (0.57), followed by freshman Katie Perry and senior Merritt Mathias at 26th with a 0.5 average each. Mathias and West are also tied at 17th for total assists with eight.

AGGIE RPI

In the most recent RPI rankings (through games of Oct. 19) the Aggies sit at No. 19, led by only Oklahoma State (No. 10) and Baylor (No. 16) in the Big 12. A&M has consistently been in the top 25 in RPI rankings since reporting began this season.

2011 ROSTER

The Aggies’ 25-player roster features 13 upperclassmen, two sophomores and 10 freshmen. A&M’s fresh squad is guided by four seniors. The team returns seven starters and 11 letterwinners from a year ago.

FRESH TALENT

The Aggies’ 10 freshmen have made a big impact on the 2011 squad. Monogue and Annie Kunz top the team offensively, while both goalkeepers, Renée McDermott and Jordan Day, are freshmen. Allie Bailey and Bianca Brinson contribute regularly as forwards and Meghan Streight, Katie Perry and Leigh Edwards round out the midfield. Each freshman has seen action already this season, while all-but 18 (69 percent) of A&M’s 58 goals were netted by members of the Class of 2015.

BIG 12 PRESEASON POLL

Texas A&M, the reigning conference champion, notched the second spot in the 2011 Big 12 Soccer Preseason Poll, after receiving three of the first-place votes and tallying 59 points. With 62 points, Oklahoma State was chosen to win the conference. Only 11 points separate the next four schools, as Missouri (44), Texas (43), Texas Tech (36) and Oklahoma (33) round out the top six. The remainder of the poll consists of Baylor (16), Kansas (16) and Iowa State (15).

BIG 12 PLAYER OF THE WEEK – MONOGUE

Monogue took her third conference honor in four weeks as she was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week. The forward from McKinney, Texas, led the Aggies to a 6-1 victory over Drake on Friday at Ellis Field. Monogue netted two goals and contributed an assist in the effort. The freshman leads the Big 12 in points (33), points per game (2.06), goals (13) and goals per game (0.81).

CONFERENCE LEADERS

The Aggies lead the Big 12 in overall statistics in several categories as a team, including shots (354), points (188), goals (58), goals per game (3.62), assists (72) and assists per game (4.50). Mathias leads the league in all games in shots (67) and shots per game (4.19), while Monogue tops the competition in points (33), points per game (2.06), goals (13) and goals per game (0.81).

TWO AGGIES ON PRESEASON ALL-BIG 12 TEAM

Mathias and sophomore Rachel Lenz earned spots on the Preseason All-Big 12 Team. This pair earned spots on the 2010 All-Big 12 First Team and the 2010 Big 12 All-Newcomer Team.

HOME SCHEDULE

A&M’s home schedule in 2011 is quite favorable and should bring lots of excitement to Ellis Field. There are 11 regular season contests on the home slate with four of those matches against teams that competed in the NCAA Tournament last season. The Aggies play four Big 12 games at home. This weekend’s games are the final two home matches of the season.

NONCONFERENCE SCHEDULE

A&M faced one of America’s toughest nonconference schedules in the nation. The Aggies’ nine-game slate pitted them against five teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2010, two of which (North Carolina and Duke) competed in the round of 16. Friday’s match against Drake was the Aggies’ final nonconference match of the regular season.

THE AGGIE SOCCER HOUR

This year the Aggie Soccer Hour, Texas A&M soccer’s weekly radio talk show, is broadcast live from Ocean’s Bar and Grill on Texas Ave. in College Station every Tuesday from 6-7 p.m. Come and be a part of the show each week, listen locally on KZNE 1150 AM or worldwide on Aggies All-Access and RadioAggieland.com. The show is brought to you by Monograms & More.

AGGIE SOCCER ON TV THIS SUNDAY

The Aggie soccer team will be on the tube for its Oct. 23 match against Oklahoma State at Ellis Field. The game will be broadcast nationwide on ESPNU. Last season the Aggies and Cowgirls played in College Station, ending in a 1-0 victory for the Aggies and their 11th Big 12 Championship.

We still have a ways to go to be the team we think we can be. But, it has been an interesting and exciting journey so far.

I want to thank everyone for their patience and understanding that this young team is filled with talent and that it might take a little longer than many wished to get the formula right. You can see just how talented this group of players is. We are ranked #2 (out of more than 320 D1 teams) in offense, and have shut out each of our most recent Big 12 opponents to put ourselves in a tie for 1st place in the conference.

But NOW we really need you fans – The 12th Man – to step up and make a big positive impact for this team and soccer program!!!! Our attendance has been down a bit this season, despite scoring lots of goals at home and some cool upgrades to the stadium and the game day atmosphere (like the Aggie Militia’s drum line).

We only have 3 home games left in the 2011 season and they all occur in the next 2 weekends! So, I hope you will make plans to be at Ellis Field for all 3 games and that you’ll bring a car-load of loud, passionate Aggies with you to each match!

This Friday, the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets will march into Ellis Field for our game against Drake. That’s always very impressive. Kickoff for the match is at 6:30pm, but gates will open at 5:30. So, please get here early to get your seat!

Here is a schedule of Events we will be supporting and taking part in this week:

Tuesday – The Monograms & More Aggie Soccer Hour – our weekly radio talk show on Sports Radio 1150 The Zone. Join us live at Oceans Bar& Grill or listen live on your radio or Smartphone via the www.radioaggieland.com app.

Thursday – FREE YOUTH SOCCER CLINIC – 6:30-7:30pm at Ellis Field for boys and girls ages 7-10. All participants should wear their soccer cleats and shin guards and bring their ball. We will provide the fun with the Aggie players and coaches. And, all participants get a free ticket to Friday’s home game vs. Drake.

Friday – GAMEDAY! – Texas A&M v. Drake – 6:30pm at Ellis Field

Saturday – Midnight Yell Practice at Kyle Field
Football v Baylor at 11am at Kyle Field.

We will fly to Lubbock today for a Big 12 match at Texas Tech tonight. The Aggies are currently in first place in the Big 12 and holds a 15-1-1 all-time winning advantage over the Red Raiders. But, this won't be an easy game. Tech is having one of their best seasons ever, and are very good at home on their artificial turf surface. This will only be the Aggies 2nd match on an artificial surface since 1993.

SCOUTING TEXAS TECH

The Red Raiders are 8-3-2 this season, with a 2-0-1 conference mark. In 2010 the team was 11-8-1, finishing 7th in the Big 12 with a 4-5-1 conference record. Last weekend Texas Tech tied Baylor in Waco with a scoreless game that ended in double overtime, before defeating Oklahoma, 2-0, in Norman. Sophomore Jessica Fuston heads the Red Raider offense, recording 12 points on the season with six goals, one of them a game winner. Sophomore Victoria Esson has spent 1,050 minutes in goal, playing in all but one of Tech’s 13 games. The goalkeeper is second in the Big 12 in shutouts, while Texas Tech leads the league as a team. Esson has earned four Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week awards, including the last three consecutive honors, which she earned for posting six shutouts in-a-row.

THE SERIES

A&M has matched up against Texas Tech every year since 1994. The Aggies have lost only once, in 1999. The teams tied in a scoreless match in 2009 in College Station, and A&M holds a 15-1-1 overall advantage.

Last year the No. 10 Aggies hosted the Red Raiders, winning a 4-0 shutout that was led by then-senior Rachel Shipley’s two second-half goals. Then-junior Bri Young netted the first goal of the match in the 17th minute. Whitney Hooper followed with the 2-0 goal 10 minutes later. Goalkeeper Kelly Dyer made four saves en route to her fourth shutout of the season.

LAST TIME OUT – MISSOURI AND KANSAS

The Aggies split a pair of Big 12 matches on the road last weekend. The trip began with a hard-fought 1-0 loss to Missouri in Columbia, Mo. A&M outshot the Tigers, 18-16, including an 11-to-7 shots-on-goal advantage, but couldn’t capitalize on opportunities to score.

On Sunday the Aggies faced Kansas in Lawrence, Kan., and ended the day with a 3-0 shutout of the Jayhawks. Kansas had never been blanked in 2011, but sure-handed Aggie goalkeeper Jordan Day grabbed six saves on the match and earned her second shutout of the season. Senior Merritt Mathias netted the first goal of the match in the 10th minute, assisted by freshman Katie Perry. With 11 minutes left in the first half, senior Rachael Balaguer passed to freshman Leigh Edwards, who sent a cross to freshman Allie Bailey. Bailey attacked from the left and scored the 2-0 goal. A penalty kick by freshman Kelley Monogue after she was fouled in the box gave A&M the final 3-0 lead with 6:02 on the clock in the second half.

NATIONAL OFFENSE

Through last weekend’s games, the Aggies have the No. 2 scoring offense in the nation, leading all-but one NCAA team with 3.57 goals per game. Perry and junior Beth West are tied at 21st in the nation in assists per game with a 0.58 average, while the pair and Mathias are tied at 14th in total assists with 7. Freshman Annie Kunz is one of the nation’s leading scorers, ranked 17th with 10 goals this season. Monogue sits at 26th in total goals with 9, and Kunz joins her at No. 18 in total points with 24.

AGGIE RPI

In the most recent RPI rankings (through games of Oct. 2) the Aggies sit at No. 19, led by only Oklahoma State (No. 14) in the Big 12. Kunz is listed at No. 26 in goals per game with a .833 average, and is tied for 25th in points per game (2.00).

Kunz and Kelley Monogue top the team offensively, while both keepers, McDermott and Jordan Day, are freshmen. Allie Bailey and Bianca Brinson contribute regularly as forwards and Meghan Streight, Katie Perry and Leigh Edwards round out the midfield. Each freshman has seen action already this season, while all-but 16 of A&M’s 47 goals were netted by members of the Class of 2015.

SKELTON ON THE NATIONAL SCENE

Skelton was named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Week and was titled the Dallas Soccer News Player of the Week last week for her outstanding performances against Iowa State and Loyola-Chicago. The forward scored three goals, including the game winner against the Cyclones, and added an assist on the weekend.

BIG 12 PLAYER OF THE WEEK – MONOGUE

Monogue took her first conference honor last week, as she was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week. The forward from McKinney, Texas, led the Aggies to a 3-1 victory over Iowa State on Friday, scoring two of the three goals and assisting the game winner.

MONOGUE AND KUNZ NAMED TO OUR GAME MAGAZINE LISTS

MAC HERMANN TROPHY WATCH LIST

Mathias and Young, both seniors, were placed on the Missouri Athletic Club (MAC) Hermann Trophy Watch List.

NON-CONFERENCE SCHEDULE

A&M faces one of America’s toughest non-conference schedules in the nation. The Aggies’ nine-game slate pits them against five teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2010, two of which (North Carolina and Duke) competed in the round of 16.
