The 12th Man Foundation announced recently that a large donation from Julia and Mark Ellis '79 of Houston, Texas, has allowed for extensive improvements to the Texas A&M soccer stadium, to be renamed Ellis Field.

The 12th Man Foundation announced recently that a large donation from Julia and Mark Ellis ’79 of Houston, Texas, has allowed for extensive improvements to the Texas A&M soccer stadium, to be renamed Ellis Field.

The Ellises – parents of three Aggies, Preston ’11, Jenna ’13 and Sara ’14 – pledged their donation of $1 million over a year ago to be put toward improvements to the stadium. The field, formerly known as the Aggie Soccer Stadium, has been the centerpiece for several major events in the soccer community, including a Women’s College Cup, games featuring women’s national teams from foreign countries and Major League Soccer matches.

The stadium renovation includes upgrades to each section of bleachers to be finished before the Maroon and White Game on Aug. 15. A public restroom facility will be completed in the southwest corner of the stadium in mid-October and permanent roof structures over parts of the east and west grandstands will be constructed in 2012.

“I’m really excited about all of the incredible upgrades being done to the stadium and am thankful for the overwhelming generosity of Julia and Mark Ellis,” head coach G Guerrieri said. “Their incredible gift has made all of these positive changes possible.”

Construction crews broke ground at Ellis Field in June, and have worked continuously throughout the summer to be ready for the 2011 season. The bleachers on each side of the stadium have been restructured to improve seating for fans.

The west grandstand has been expanded from 400 to 700 reserved seats, and each ticket holder in that area will now be able to enjoy the match from a chair-back seat. In addition, the west side of the stadium now features an Aggie Soccer Club deck that spans the top of the entire grandstand.

Temporary general admission structures at the north and south end zones have been removed and replaced by permanent bleacher seats. The former team bench structures on the west side of the stadium have also been removed to make way for additional reserved seating.

The east grandstand will feature a Junior Aggie Club party deck, added to the top of the northeast bleachers for the enjoyment of young soccer fans. Also on the east side of the stadium, a student section has been added to the midfield directly in front of the press box to give A&M students the chance to be in the center of the action.

“These upgrades don’t really increase the capacity of the stadium, but they will greatly improve the comfort and game-day experience of all of our great fans,” Guerrieri said. “Our fans are the best in America and now they will be in a stadium that comes closer to matching that level of excellence.”

Season tickets will remain at the 2010 prices, giving season ticket holders an advantage with upgraded seating.

“Finally, all of our season ticket holders with a reserved seat will be able to sit with the sun at their backs in a comfortable seat with enough legroom, and our students will move right into the middle of the action,” Guerrieri said. “I love how loyal our fans have been over the years, and we’re so happy to know that they will get even more for their money this season.”

The reigning Big 12 Champion Aggies begin their 2011 campaign at home against Fresno State on Aug. 19. Ellis Field will be the site of 11 regular-season matches, including four conference contests this season. The Maroon and White Game on Aug. 15 will break -in the new turf. For more information on Texas A&M soccer, log on to AggieAthletics.com.

“Once the season is completed in December, there are additional plans to add roof structures over the east and west club decks and seating areas,” Guerrieri said. “This will complete this phase of upgrades and make Ellis Field as impressive as any college soccer facility in the nation.”

Click here to view the embedded video.

We have enjoyed going around the state to work with top young players. For those of you who have come to play with us, we want to say “THANKS!”

We hope to see you in Aggieland this summer for the Texas A&M Soccer Camp session of your choice. By the way, we have lots of great opportunities to fit the Aggie Soccer camp Experience into your busy summer schedule. Go to www.AggieSoccerCamp.com and you’ll see our dates and different types of sessions. It’s a great website which describes everything about the camp and even has a little music video featuring photos taken during last summer’s sessions.

For those of you who’ve come to our clinics this spring, here are the ANSWERS to the Homework Questions:

Only 1 Team from the state of Texas earned a big to the most recent (2009) NCAA Soccer Championship Tournament; The Aggies of Texas A&M. In fact, A&M was the 1 and only team; men or women!

Since the Big 12 Conference began in 1996, the Aggies have WON 10 Big 12 CHAMPIONSHIPS. By the way, that is the most of any program.

Texas A&M has been invited to the last 15 NCAA Soccer Championship Tournaments in a row! No other program in this part of the world comes close to that; only 4 teams across the nation have been in the past 15 straight!

The Aggies set a single game NCAA Attendance record of 8,204 at the Aggie Soccer Stadium when A&M beat North Carolina 1-0 (FYI – Ashlee Pistorius scored the goal)!

Thanks again for coming to play with us and in doing your homework! I hope to see you this summer at The Texas A&M Soccer Camp!

Every day I am reminded by friends and supporters of our program of just how special Texas A&M Soccer players really are. I’m not just talking about their prowess on the soccer pitch, but more about the way our ladies carry themselves as representatives of their families, teammates, and our university in general.

In a conversation earlier this week, a supporter summed it up this way – “When people look at athletes from our other sports they’re rightly impressed with the physical dimension of that person, but when we look at Aggie soccer players, we’re blown away by the total person – their intelligence, manners, athleticism, character – they ARE the way we’d like our college kids to look and behave. It’s just a bonus that your soccer team is great year after year after year…”

We teach our players that the more you give to your community, the better your community becomes. Thus, our players and coaches work hard to be good citizens and neighbors.

Here is a nice email that my wife received earlier this week:

Subject: Nicole Ketchum – FCA meeting

“I wanted to let you know how awesome and impressive Nicole was today at our FCA Board meeting. She shared how she and 18 fellow Aggie soccer players participated in a weekend FCA retreat (19 out of 27 players is a strong showing). It was obvious how grounded she and her teammates are in their faith.

“I am glad they were able to participate and appreciative of her feedback to see how FCA and God is working in their lives seeking His guidance.

“While I’m continually amazed at what your team does year in and year out on the field, it’s nice to see what solid leaders and persons you’re coaching/educating, too.”

Keep up the good work,

Michael J. Ashfield

Here’s another from a youth leader in town:

Coach G,

“I just wanted to say thank you so much for arranging for Mary and Kat to come out and talk with our youth Friday night! They did a great job and we so appreciate their time and service. Please be sure to let me know if there’s ever anything we can do for all of you.”
-John Kral, CFLE

I have a drawer full of nice cards with comments similar to the messages above. I’m a lucky guy to be able to work in a place that attracts these kinds of kids!
